James Black, Danny Feng, and Matheu Jefferson (a non-318 player) tied for first at the CIS tournament today at CES* 70. James won the blitz playoff. Below are some positions from IS 318 players games, arranged as a quiz. The questions should be answered in order, since later questions sometimes give away earlier answers.

David told me he reviewed the Max Lange Gambit last night after losing several blitz games to teammate Shawn Swindell (who for some reason is playing 1.... e5?!) I'm so happy when the kids study their openings and it pays off.

3. Michael Williams- Henry Cali. Black is up two pawns and so easily winning, but what's the fastest way?

4. The previous position developed into this, when black inexplicably played 38... g3, but went on to win anyway after 39. fg hg 40. hg Kc4. How could white have improved?

5. Randy Rivera is black in this position against former 318 player Ezequiel Quinones. Ezequiel has played against the French Fort Knox (1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3/d2 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Bd7) enough to know a good set-up for white (Nf3, Bd3, 0-0, c4, b3, Bb2), but here he used an inaccurate move order. What's the best way for Randy to take advantage?

6. same game. Is black ready to play 18 ... e5?

7. Still the same game. Here black retreated with 20... Nd7? Why (exactly) does this lose?

8. Lequasiah is white in this position and has been trying to attack for a long time. Her opponent just gave her a big chance with ...Rd2. How could she have won immediately?

Danny Feng and Azeez Alade tied for first (4-0) at today's CIS tournament. Danny beat Alexis Paredes in the last round and won the blitz playoff against Azeez. 2) 12....f5! 13. Qd3 (13. Qf3 is best) 13... f4! 14. Ne4 this loses 2 pieces for a rook and pawn (14. Nc4! was the only saving move) 14... Rxe4 15. Qxe4 fxe3 16. fxe3

16... Nf6 17. Qf3 Qe7 18. Rae1 Ne4 and white won without problems.

4) The simplest and most efficient way to guard the pawn is ... Bf6. Matthew played 1... Rfe8 and quickly got a passive position. 2. Rac1 e6 3. Rc7 b6 4. Rfc1

Here, Matthew played ... b5 and went on to lose, slowly and painfully. But it's not too late: black can still activate with 4...e5! 5. dxe5 Bxe5 6. R7c2 (6. Rb7? Bxb2) 6... d4!

5) White threatens 7. Bxf7! Kxf7 8. Ne5+ K moves 9. Nxg4. Black should make a move that stops this, like 6... e6.

6) Instead of castling, Austin should have played 9...g4!! 10. Nd2 Qh4 with mate soon.

7) I was impressed with James' decision to take the bishop instead of the pawn. He eventually drew the game.

8) 6...Ng4! wins a pawn: white has nothing better than 7. Be3.

9) Kevin played 1... Nh4! 2. Kf1 Bd3+ 3. Re2 Qg2+ 4. Ke1 Nf3# (D)!

At a tournament held in Chinatown on Saturday, Alexis Paredes and Rawn Prowell tied for first place. Both had 4-0 scores, but Alexis eliminated Rawn int he blitz playoff. the entire team played well with many players scoring 3 points. Stay tuned as Alexis will annotate his victory over Mattheu Jefferson.

In the reserve section, Rhoda Lynch had a perfect 4-0 score!

And once again, Jie Jing and Jacob had the same exact score. HMMMMMMMMMMMM

Lisa played the attacking move 22.Qh6!

What would you suggest for black here?

Black could play a move that attacks the Rg1, like 22...Qa7 or 22....Qb6, or he could retreat his bishop with 22....Bg7. But he didn't see Lisa's threat, and made a move like 22...Qc7. (I forgot to write down the next moves, but it was something like this!) How can Lisa continue her attack and win?

In our two quad tournaments held this week, Ezequiel THE BEAST Quinones unleashed a mighty attack on his opponents. In the quad held on Wednesday, Ezequiel went 4-0! Today, Ezequiel upset Rochelle and Mattheu but faced off against the KING PAREDES in the final round. Alexis, fresh off his 1900 smashing victories on Wednesday tamed the Wild BEAST in the final game. Ezequiel may be 1800? What a great job.

Sixth Graders on Fire

David, Aleem, and Danny

At the tournament held last weekend at CES 70 in the Bronx, our sixth graders posted some impressive results!

Danny Feng won the reserve section in his first week playing in that section. His rating went up almost 400 points.

Other strong performers included Aleem Awan, gio Quinones and David Kim who all went 4-0 in the Novice section.

Shawn Swindell also posted a great performance at the Marshall u1800 tournament by winning all 4 games.

Next tournament will be the winter quads held on Wednesday at 9 am. Any player over 1400 is welcome to come and play in a rated quad

Daniel Wins!

In the tournament held today in the Bronx, Daniel Maciag took clear first by beating the super talented Justus Williams in the last round. The entire open team did well with sixth graders Randy Rivera and Joel Ogunremi posting some impressive upsets. Rochelle's victory streak came to an end as she was held to a draw in the last round by M. Jefferson. What a streak!

In the novice section, special congratulations go to Richard Wu and Danny Feng who both won 3.5 and led the novice team to a first place team finish.

Rochelle Ballantyne has done it AGAIN! She won her third consecutive Chess in the Schools tournament this weekend. The tournament was held at Frederick Douglas Academy on Martin Luther King Jr Day. Other top players included Alexis Paredes, Pobo Efekoro and Orlando Gonzalez. Our next tournament will be Saturday at CES 70 in the Bronx. Can Rochelle win four in a row ?

The first back to school tournament was held on September14, 2007 at I.S. 318. Over 50 players battled it out in three sections. The Open section was won by Michael Peguero with a perfect score. The reserve section was won by Michael Amatulli! The beginner section was won by Jonathan Duran with a score of 5.5/6.

The team also went to the NY Met game on Friday evening. Fun was had by all.

A reminder----Chess Club begins this week. See Ms. Vicary in Room 319 for a permission slip.

For those students who are in Mr. Sher's Thursday group. The lessons will begin this Thursday.
